Employee motivation and well-being in the digital era

The tenth Edenred-Ipsos Barometer of “Employee well-being and motivation in Europe” covered 14 countries this year, with a focus on the digital workplace. While a large majority of employees in Europe agree that the digital revolution is well under way, it does not mean the same to all of them. The most widespread initiatives in Europe include e-management of HR processes (e.g. pay slips), e-learning, corporate social networks and virtual work spaces. Yet, agreements on home office or BYOD policies (Bring Your Own Device) are still the exception.

A positive impact of digital technology

For most respondents, digital tools have either a positive (40%) or a neutral (40%) impact on their motivation at work. Irrespective of the country, 1 in 2 European employees consider digital tools as a way of developing their skills (51%) and feel that they have a positive impact on their autonomy at work (48%) and their quality of life at work (48%). Conversely, 1 in 5 European employees think that the digital revolution could have a negative impact on their work/life balance and a comparable proportion mention a negative impact on managerial behaviours.

Employee profiling

The results of the Edenred-Ipsos Barometer reveal four employee profiles; each of which have different perceptions on the shift to digital:

The challenge for companies and their HR departments is to implement different policies for each population to make this revolution a driver for improving employee well-being and motivation.
